In a content analysis of comments posted to YouTube by individuals who self-identified as having a serious mental illness, there appeared to be opportunities to feel less alone, provide hope, find support and learn through mutual reciprocity, and share coping strategies for day-to-day challenges of living with a mental illness (Naslund, Grande, Aschbrenner, & Elwyn, 2014). In another study of young adults with serious mental illness, most indicated that they used social media to help feel less isolated (Gowen et al., 2012). However, there remains uncertainty regarding the risks and potential harms of social media for mental health (Orben & Przybylski, 2019), and how best to weigh these concerns against potential benefits. These various efforts using social media, as summarized in this commentary, hold promise for improving the lives of individuals living with mental disorders. Specifically, we summarize current research on the use of social media among mental health service users, and early efforts using social media for the delivery of evidence-based programs.
